Meet Dr. Gary Kao
Dr. Gary Kao is a board-certified pain management doctor and anesthesiologist. Born and raised in the Bay Area of Northern California, his studies allowed him to travel and explore the United States. His impressive career began on the East Coast at Johns Hopkins University. Here, he developed a strong interest in neural signaling and pharmacological pathways and he graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience. Additionally, while he attended Johns Hopkins University, he minored in Latin American studies after studying abroad in Bolivia and Argentina. This culminated in a year of working abroad for the Spanish Ministry of Education before attending medical school.
After graduating with his bachelor's degree, he eventually found himself in the south at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. At Tulane, he received his medical degree and completed a year-long internship in internal medicine. Having developed a taste for the south, he continued onto Atlanta for residency training in anesthesiology at the prestigious Emory University School of Medicine. During his time at Emory, Dr. Kao participated in the Political Action Committee and also presented information about quality improvement and patient safety in and out of the operating rooms.
Following his time at Emory University, Dr. Kao pursued a fellowship at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City where he gained extensive experience and specialized training in pain management and procedural interventions. While attending his fellowship, he served as an instructor in ultrasound interventions at a national conference and he published an article in the peer-reviewed journal, Interventional Pain Management.
Specialties & Expertise
Though his training is broad, Dr. Kao has a particular interest in minimally invasive procedures to treat various chronic pain conditions utilizing x-ray fluoroscopy and advanced ultrasound techniques. He also has a special interest in radiofrequency ablations, kyphoplasties, and spinal cord stimulation. As a carefully selected participant for the mentoring program in the North American Neuromodulation Society, he is at the forefront of innovation and emerging technology. He offers the most advanced techniques in spinal cord stimulation and considers it an excellent, minimally-invasive alternative to surgery and traditional treatment for back pain, leg pain, sciatica, neuropathy, and CRPS. It is also an effective therapy for those who have chronic pain after spine surgery.
Dr. Gary Kao is proud to be a member of the following societies:
- American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP)
- Spine Intervention Society (SIS)
- American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM)
- North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS)
Dr. Kao’s philosophy is simple: first take care of his community, family, and friends. As a pain management doctor, he is committed to helping people improve the quality of their lives while minimizing pain. He is excited to live in the sparkling city by the sea and is looking forward to being an active member of the community. In his spare time, Dr. Kao is an avid traveler, cook, and (rusty) musician, and he plans to learn water sports and angling. Additionally, he is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
