Common Symptoms Of CRPS

Various symptoms are associated with CRPS, such as:

  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Limited mobility to the affected areas of the body
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Burning and throbbing in the extremities
  • Muscle weakness and spasms
  • Alterations in skin texture, color, and temperature
  • Alterations in the growth of nail and hair

Typically, symptoms of CRPS may differ among patients and can change over time. It is important to notice any changes as they develop. For some patients, the limb could go cold or pale, and when this occurs, CRPS is typically irreversible.

Causes Of CRPS

CRPS can develop in two different types: type 1 and type 2. Also called reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS), type 1 typically develops after an injury or illness and makes up about 90% of cases. The symptoms of type 2 are similar to type 1 but often occur after a specific nerve injury. In both types of CRPS, the condition is theorized to the cause of a trauma or irregularity within the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Treatments For CRPS

Treatment for CRPS can include multiple approaches, such as medications, physical and occupational therapy, psychological treatments, and neuromodulation. This could include spinal cord stimulation, nerve stimulation, or steroid injections. Depending on the type and location of the condition, a member of our skilled pain management team will be able to provide you with the best course of treatment for your specific symptoms. In most cases, a less invasive form of treatment may be initially suggested prior to the recommendation of more invasive procedures. Our team of physicians will be available to help you understand your treatment options and decide upon the ideal one for you.
